People who have been impacted in the south-east flooding crisis can apply for disaster payments from today.

The Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment offers a one-off payment of $1000 for every eligible adult and $400 for every eligible child.

It will be available to people who have suffered significant loss, including a severely damaged or destroyed home or serious injury.

Currently, the payment is only being extended to residents from the Gympie and North Burnett regions.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison told Neil Breen the payments will soon be extended to more regions following the disastrous weekend.

“They will be progressively activated,” he said.

“When we activate those for the Brisbane Council area and those parts, I expect we’ll be making those decisions later today.

“I anticipate that then those payments will flow probably from tomorrow.”
