How the state government landed itself ‘in a pickle’ over quarantine facilities

The cost of the Wellcamp quarantine facility has been revealed despite a commercial in confidence agreement.

It comes after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk delivered “one of the worst performances” at a press conference during her time in power.

Neil Breen said a six-month argument that the cost couldn’t be revealed was “blown up” with one line from the Premier.

“Annastacia Palaszczuk, as she does under pressure, she cracked,” Neil said.

“The error she made yesterday as a politician who was defending a line of commercial in confidence was enormous.

“In fact, it was one of the worst performances I’ve seen in a press conference during her seven-year reign.”

Ms Palaszczuk told the press she would reveal the cost of Wellcamp if the federal government shared its figures on the Pinkenba facility.

“She totally and utterly blew herself up in flames,” Neil continued. “It’s ridiculous.”

The federal government called the Premier’s bluff, revealing Pinkenba cost is between $350- and $400 million.

“That left the state government in a pickle…”

Senior Nine News reporter Tim Arvier told Neil Breen the circumstances around the agreement were always hazy.

“It all goes back to when Wellcamp was announced,” he said.

“It was announced one day after they announced Queensland’s borders were shutting.

“There’s always been a political smell about this arrangement.”
