Disaster relief agencies say there’s a long road ahead for south-east Queenslanders who need support in the wake of the February flood event.

CEO of St Vincent de Paul Society, Kevin Mercer, says there’s a range of support available, but it’s especially important to link flood-impacted residents with government support and relief.

“Six weeks into post the the flood event, it’s more about the day to day support for food, furniture, clothing, maybe helping with temporary rental assistance and maybe helping with that emotional support,” he told Rob McKnight filling in on 4BC Afternoons.

“Most importantly connecting people into the disaster relief system, which can be complex, particularly when you’re dealing yourself with trauma rom the flood event.”

He says they have received around $1.7 million donations.

“We’ve got more generous donation pledges coming.”

But he said there’s a lot more work to do long-term.
