How the LNP favouring One Nation in QLD could have ‘significant’ implications

Scott Emerson

The Liberal National Party will preference One Nation in Queensland, in a move which could have “significant” implications.

The LNP announced the party will preference Pauline Hanson ahead of former premier Campbell Newman or Clive Palmer.

Griffith University political expert Paul Williams says there’s no love lost between Mr Newman and his former party.

“It’s really significant, much more significant than some seats in the lower house because … rarely are major party preferences instrumental in getting minor party candidates elected in the lower house, but certainly in the senate it goes both ways.

“Minor parties get major parties elected in the senate, and major party preferences can get minor parties and even micro parties elected.”

He says the field for the last of the senate seats is increasingly crowded, and Ms Hanson is up against a number of candidates who are “saying the same thing”.

But he says she’s still probably the favourite to win that spot.
