How Rachael Grinham realised she would be a flag-bearer for Australia

Dean & Sofie

Rachael Grinham has retold the moment she realised she’d be a flag-bearer for the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.

The six-time squash representative has been named as one of two two carry the Australian flag, alongside Kookaburras co-captain Eddie Ockenden.

When asked how long she had to sit on the news, Grinham gave Laurel, Gary & Mark a surprising response.

“Literally about 15 minutes before they were about to announce it to the entire team!

“I did get asked, I think, the day or so before to meet with Petria Thomas and the Governor-General and his wife to go on a walk, which I just expected there would be a dozen other athletes doing the same thing.

“It turned out it was just Eddie and I and I think we were both looking at each other thinking, ‘Is this what’s happening?'”

It’s only the second time there has been co-flag bearers for Australia.
