How Qld’s ‘grey market’ could be the key to cracking down on shootings
Queensland needs to go further in targeting guns on the ‘grey market’ to put an end to the rising number of shootings, a criminologist says.
It’s estimated there are 260,000 illicit firearms nationwide, many of which entered circulation from the ‘grey market’, as unregistered weapons that weren’t surrendered in buyback schemes.

Bond University criminologist Terry Goldsworthy told Bill McDonald buyback schemes could divert the weapons away from the black market but have seen decreasing success over the years.
“We do have a gun buyback going at the moment but … only 2000 weapons had been surrendered in Queensland to early this year,” he said.
“We’re not seeing many weapons come back from that grey market. I think we could probably do a little more there.”
