Police are pleading with drivers to be safe, slow down and take care on Queensland’s roads this festive season, after a record-breaking road toll.

There’s been 292 lives lost on the state’s roads in 2022, 17 more than this time last year.

Acting Chief Superintendent Chris Stream says it’s been a grim milestone.

“We have now surpassed that 2012 figure, there were 280 lives lost in 2012 we are now well and truly past that,” he said.

He said there will be a number of unmarked, covert police cars and motorbikes out in force.

“On our beach areas, through some of those holiday spots, we are also using drones to monitor traffic,” he said.

He said drones can patrol long distances.

“They are being coupled with handheld camera devices,” he said.
