The state government has announced a review of the impacts short term rentals like Airbnb and Stayz are having on the housing market.

Deputy Premier Steven Miles announced the government has tasked industry experts with looking at the short-term rental market as Queensland faces a chronic shortage of homes and affordable rentals.

Real Estate Institute of Queensland’s chief operating officer Dean Milton said they welcomed the investigation.

“We really want to encourage the government to look at the why and that’s something we are hoping to come out of the housing market as well, this is really a symptom rather than the cause of the problem,” he told Neil Breen on Brisbane Live.

“People are putting their properties under the short-term market for a reason.”

He said short-term markets also play a crucial role in the tourism centres.

“We would love to be in a position where this wasn’t even part of the conversation.”
