Hope for ‘game changer’ 10-minute COVID-19 test

4BC News

A new COVID-19 test, yet to be given approval, is being described as a game changer.

Trials have shown Virulizer is around 1000 times more sensitive than other rapid tests currently on the market.

Instead of a nasal swab, the test collects saliva and returns results in 10 minutes.

In a recent trial in Malaysia, 100 people were tested for COVID-19, with Virulizer outperforming a rapid test.

A traditional PCR test and Virulizer both returned nine positive test results, while the rapid test detected just two.

The technology was developed by the University of Technology in Sydney and Perth company Alcolizer, which normally manufactures drug and alcohol tests.

It’s hoped to be rolled out at aged care facilities, hospitals and airports by mid-2022, providing it’s approved by the TGA.

Each test would cost around $25.
