A Brisbane teen has landed the ultimate dream after being signed by the Cincinnati Reds.

Homegrown talent 17-year-old left-handed pitcher Ben Walmsley will travel to the US after being scouted by former outfielder Donald Lutz.

Only 33 Australians have reached the Major Leagues.

Walmsley told Peter Psaltis the Reds had their eye on him for some time.

“It’s been about two years I’ve been talking to them,” he said. “We just got talking and here we are now, just signed a deal the other day.”

It’s no surprise when he’s already pitching at a whopping 91 miles per hour – that’s 144 kilometres per hour!

“Pretty much every baseball player, they won’t really hit their peak until their mid-20s, onwards.

“It’s just a long game to mature at.”

“To be in contention now is just great,” Peter concluded. “I think it’s fantastic.

“He’s 17 years of age and he’s got an opportunity of a lifetime!

“Ben Walmsley – remember the name.”
