Hetty Johnston doubts state has ‘something to hide’ in child death report

Child protection advocate Hetty Johntson says she’s unsure why the state government has shelved findings from an investigation into child deaths.

The Palaszczuk government has shelved the report, which investigated 55 deaths in the last financial year, since October.

Ms Johnston sat on the review board for the first year.

“There was a change in commissioner, I wonder if that’s part of the reason,” she told Mark Levy.

“Certainly, I didn’t feel like there was anything in there that needed to be hidden.”

Ms Johnston said government departments across the nation don’t have enough people or resources to ‘fix’ the issues they face.

“I can promise you this, and everybody listening, those people work their guts out [but] there’s just not enough of them and they burn out.

“They can’t fix it because they don’t have the tools, the equipment, the laws, the capacity to actually fix it. There’s not enough foster carers, there’s not enough anything.

“It’s not one thing that needs to be fixed, it’s our whole approach as a society to children.”
