‘Hammer blow’: QLD opposition opposes BHP mine automation

The Queensland opposition has slammed BHP after it announced driverless trucks will be rolled out at a mine in the Bowen Basin.

Up to 86 driverless trucks will be introduced at the Goonyella Riverside mine.

But Queensland LNP says BHP’s mining license should now be reviewed.

Opposition leader Deb Frecklington tells Ross Greenwood the local workers should be reskilled instead of jobs for the control centre being taken to Brisbane.

“The loss of hundreds of jobs is just a hammer blow to towns like Moranbah.

“Towns like Moranbah have actually been built around the license that has been given to those mining companies to create local jobs.

“So there’s other ways that BHP could have done this terrible decision for the local community.”
