In September 2013 the Queensland Government scrapped mandatory cat registration, leaving it up to individual councils.

But Greens Councillor for Brisbane City Council Jonathan Sri wants to raise the cost of registrations to encourage responsible pet ownership.

“I think it’s really important that we have concessions and discounts for people on low incomes.

“But you can also have discounts for people who desex their cats or adopts their cat.

“By having those different registration fees you can encourage positive behaviours.”
