Greens candidate Max Chandler-Mather has successfully stolen the inner-Brisbane seat of Griffith from Labor, vowing to do get back to grassroots issues in the community.

Neil Breen said the Greens were eyeing off two other seats in Brisbane, in what was a fascinating contest.

“It looks like the Greens could have 12 Senate seats – the most by a minor party in Australian history.”

The Greens candidate says it feels surreal.

He says people used to turn to local MPs for local issues.

“One of the things political parties used to do well over 10 years, they were permanent social organisations in people’s communities,” he told Neil Breen.

While he was out in the community talking to prospective voters, he picked up a “general anxiety for the future”.

“I’ve lost count of the number of times in particularly parents came to the door and said I have never voted Greens but I am really worried about the kind of future my kids are going to inherit, not just because of climate change but low wages, and massive house prices.”

He says there was no conversation on a national level about where Australia will be, long-term.

“That was the unspoken back story to this election not just particular issues but a general sense of re-connecting politics to people’s lives.”
