Greens candidate hopes to snatch Labor-held seat on grassroots platform

The Greens are hopeful of snatching an inner-city Brisbane seat from Labor at the federal election this Saturday.

Max Chandler-Mather and his campaign volunteers are feeling confident the seat could turn green after knocking on more than 80,000 doors across the Griffith electorate.

The ALP’s Terri Butler currently holds the seat with a 2.9 per cent margin but Mr Chandler-Mather says she’s been absent on major issues for residents.

“One of the big issues has been flight noise,” Neil Breen noted. “You’ve been able to make hay on that issue.”

Mr Chandler-Mather said both the Labor and Liberal parties have avoided conversations about flight paths.

“What I think has alienated a bunch of residents … is neither party has done anything,” he said.

“Often, Terri Butler, when asked to comment on this, will refuse to comment on stories like this.

“I think residents are getting a bit sick of being ignored by politicians and as a result, I think a lot of people are turning to the Greens for the first time.”

In the wide-ranging interview, Max Chandler-Mather and Neil Breen also covered off on the Greens’ plan to fund policies and whether there’s plans for a death tax.
