Government announces extra protection for Queenslanders amid major hacks

neil breen

The Queensland government has added a level of protection for driver licence information following recent data breaches.

Going forward, Queenslanders applying for services that require identity verification will have to supply both their regular licence number and also their unique card number.

It will act as a new two-factor verification system.

More than 170,000 people across the state have applied for a new driver licence since late September.

Deputy director-general at the Department of Main Roads and Transport, Andrew Mahon, said it will go a long way to safeguarding people who have been victims of the recent Optus hack.
