‘Gamble responsibly’ will be replaced by new taglines under new rules introduced by the Albanese government.

Seven taglines including ‘Chances are you’re about to lose’ will replace warnings to ‘Gamble responsibly’.

Other warnings to be introduced include “Think. Is this a best you really want to place?” and “What’s gambling really costing you?”.

It’s hoped the new warning messages will reduce problem gambling.

Announcing the changes, Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth explained the reforms are based on behavioural research.

Tim Costello, chief advocate of the Alliance for Gambling Reform, said it had been in the pipeline for a while.

“Anything is better than the gamble responsibly message that actually just blames the individual, scapegoat it and had the effect of stigmatising and silencing problem gamblers,” he told Sofie Formica.

“It’s much easier to admit you have a drug problem in this country than a gambling problem.”

He said Australia has the greatest gambling loss per person in the world, 40 per cent higher than America, which comes in second.

“The messages are better, but the messages will just become wallpaper when you have tsunami of gambling ads, which we have.”
