Fisherman hauls in $20,000 barramundi while on holiday
A holiday in Far North Queensland has netted a young fisherman his dream catch and a cool $20,000.
Billy Perske jagged first prize in the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries’ Fish’n’SIP$ competition after hauling in a one-metre-long barramundi on Lake Tinaroo near Cairns.
Mr Perske told Bill McDonald on 4BC Summer Mornings he still can’t believe it.
“I’m absolutely stoked,” he said. “I’m still in shock, really.”
“I’m a regular fisherman. I love it. I’ve done trips around Australia before and that’s really hooked me into fishing, I think.
“Ever since, I’ve been trying to get that metre-plus barra and I’ve finally got it. Not only was it my first metery, it was about $20,000!

Mr Perske’s win was the first of a possible fifteen in the competition.
Lake Tinaroo, Lake Proserpine, Kinchant Dam, Lake Callide, and Lake Cania are each breaming with 20 tagged fish that could net fishers a cash prize.
The only catch is fishers need to purchase a SIPS permit to tackle the five impoundments.
Otherwise, it’s first in, best dressed!
The first fifteen fish caught on a line and accurately reported to InfoFish will win a prize. The sooner you catch a tagged fish, the larger the prize will be!
