The ruling body for swimming will no longer be known as FINA next year after an historic vote to change the name in Melbourne yesterday.

From January 1, swimming, diving, water polo and artistic swimming will be ruled by ‘Water Aquatics’, with a new constitution.

The changes herald a transparent future for the sport, which has in recent years, been accused of sweeping claims of abuse under the rug when formal complaints aren’t made.

Australian swimming legend Giaan Rooney said the change has been “a little while in the making”.

“They’ve kind of gone, in the last 18 months, a restructure, a rebranding and the great thing is they seem to really listen to the athletes’ voice,” she told Spencer Howson on 4BC Summer Breakfast.

“This is a great way to almost start from scratch.”
