Fencing and barriers have been erected on the M1 to deter a growing colony of white ibis birds near Yatala.

Yesterday, Brisbane Live callers told Neil Breen there were numerous dead birds along the motorway, after being struck by cars.

Department of Transport and Main Roads South Coast regional director Andrew Wheeler said the colony had been growing in recent weeks.

“I am pleased to say over the last few nights we have been continuing installing our concrete barriers along the northbound and southbound sections at exit 38 in Yatala,” he told Neil Breen on Brisbane Live.

“As of last night we have started putting in some fencing, on top of these barriers.”

It’s hoped the barriers will deter the ibises.

They will also work to relocate eggs and nests.
