Labor is warning the federal government’s decision to abandon COVID disaster payments is too hasty.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has flagged payments will cease once locked down states hit their 80 per cent vaccination targets.

But Deputy Leader of the Opposition Richard Marles says it’s a one-eyed decision.

“Once we get to 80 per cent vaccination rates, that doesn’t equal a return to normality for a whole lot of businesses,” he told Joe Hildebrand.

“To withdraw support at that moment in time, … is going to leave a lot of people totally stranded.”

“The lack of pace, intent and will that was shown by Scott Morrison in terms of getting the country vaccinated, that has been turned on its head now with the speed at which they are withdrawing this support.”
