Federal election 2022: The challenges ahead for both leaders
The cost of living is back on the political agenda this week, as inflation reaches its highest level in 20 years.
Nine News federal political reporter Eliza Edwards wrapped up the third week of campaigning, with just 23 days left to go until the federal election.
“Yesterday when the inflation figures dropped, that really rocketed cost of living to the centre of this election campaign and again on the economy, that’s another issue the Prime Minister believes is his biggest strength,” she told Bill McDonald, filling in on 4BC Drive.
She says Scott Morrison reiterated the risk in a Labor government, pushing the message the Coalition is the “safest pair of economic hands”.
“I think that message is damaged by the fact that inflation is so high and people are really struggling with the cost of living.
“The Prime Minister will have to prosecute that message and hope that people buy his line that he couldn’t have done anything to stop inflation getting to this point.”
She says Anthony Albanese was keeping a low profile in isolation, which was noticed by those in the Prime Minister’s camp.
She says he’ll have to hit the ground running when he’s out of COVID-19 enforced quarantine tomorrow.
