Fears thousands are dead as earthquake, then tsunami hits Indonesian island

The official death toll from the earthquake and tsunami that struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi has passed 830.

But there are fears it could soar into the thousands as rescuers continue to comb through rubble in search of survivors under collapsed buildings in the city of Palu.

World Vision’s Priscilla Kristen tells Steve Price they are trying to get basic supplies to survivors who have lost their homes.

“Food and clean water is very needed because the clean water drinking pipeline is broken.

“People are hungry and are looking for food, and the market and the stores are still closed.”
