Fact check: How truthful are scare campaigns targeting the elderly?

Gary Hardgrave

Both major parties are being accused of sparking scare campaigns that use misinformation to target elderly voters.

Labor has this week doubled down on claims the Coalition plans to transition pensions to cashless welfare cards.

Meanwhile, rumours that Labor plans to bring in a ‘death tax’ persist.

Council of the Ageing Australia CEO Ian Yates says the unfounded campaigns are frightening the elderly.

“We have pointed out that it causes distress and scares people,” he told Neil Breen.

“That kind of scare campaign is run on both sides and we don’t like them on either side.

“What we are saying to our constituents is it won’t happen, it’s not policy, it won’t happen.”
