The man who allegedly went on a stabbing rampage in Sydney’s CBD has been identified as escaped mental health patient Mert Ney.

Police have confirmed the 20-year-old Marayong man has a history of mental health issues.

He reportedly absconded from a mental health facility a few days ago before murdering one woman and stabbing another in the back.

Ney was taken to Day Street Police Station before being transferred, under police guard, to RPA Hospital at Camperdown.

In footage of the incident, he can be heard screaming, “shoot me in the head” and “Allahu Akbar”.

Despite this and the fact he was found with material relating to other mass murders, Police Commissioner Mick Fuller says the attack “is not currently classed as a terrorist incident” and that the man “has no links to terrorism”.

The investigation is continuing.
