A man in a critical condition after a unit went up in flames on the Gold Coast.

Emergency services were called to the property at Mermaid Waters before midnight.

Police are investigating after the blaze reportedly began in the kitchen and caused the hasty evacuation of a unit block.

A man in his 40s was taken to hospital in a critical condition, while a man in his 20s was transported stable.
