DNA lab whistle-blower praises state’s double-jeopardy pledge
The forensic scientist who helped trigger an inquiry into Queensland’s DNA testing lab has praised the state government’s plan for major change.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk yesterday announced all 123 recommendations made in the review have been accepted, and $93 million will be allocated to see them come to fruition.
One of the biggest takeaways from the government’s response, however, was Attorney-General Shannon Fentiman indicating she would amend Queensland’s double jeopardy laws.
“I think it’s absolutely fantastic,” forensic scientist Dr Kirsty Wright told Bill McDonald on 4BC Summer Mornings. “You can’t wipe the smile off my face.
“I think the response has been absolutely appropriate.
“What really please me was the Attorney-General’s commitment to changing the double-jeopardy laws, to expand those to sexual assaults and rapes.”
