Derelict heritage home in Milton set to be razed

A rotting heritage house in Milton appears set to be knocked down after selling for just under a million dollars.

The Sackville Street property was purchased in November last year for $900,000 despite termite damage and vegetation growing on the roof and walls.

It’s believed the weatherboard cottage will be demolished to make way for a new development.

Social researcher and demographer Mark McCrindle says it’s an interesting issue for Brisbane.

“It’s an increasing problem, a situation we are going to see more of, because Brisbane is the fastest growing city at the moment,” he told Bill McDonald, filling in on 4BC Drive.

“A lot of those larger lots have their homes not particularly built ready for subdivision or ready for more density, and it is a city that is going to see more people come and it’s going to need a bit more density.”

He says the older suburbs with older style, heritage homes are appealing to buyers.

“If every Queenslander or post-war home we just sort of knocked down because we couldn’t afford to put money into the restoration, I think we would lose a lot across the city.”

He said people are “looking for history” increasingly.
