David Littleproud’s push for ‘common sense’ on future planning decisions
Federal Agriculture Minister David Littleproud has called for state and local governments to carefully consider planning decisions for housing in disaster prone areas.
Responding to a new report into Brisbane’s flood emergency in February, Mr Littleproud says the challenge for the federal government is that the planning pen has been held by state and local governments for many years.
“What’s frustrating for us is that there have been planning decisions that have been made that allow people to develop in areas that are flood prone or bushfire prone and the Australian taxpayer has had to come back and commit to it,” he told Scott Emerson.
He has called for better planning decisions by state and local governments.
“There needs to be this thing called common sense, and particularly when you get to planning decisions that they are just not looking to get more rate revenue but they do it sensibly, and understanding there has to be mitigants, and if there can’t be mitigants there can’t be development on some land.”
