A man has died after crashing his bike while trying to avoid a swooping magpie in Wollongong at the weekend.

Just after 8am on Sunday, the 76-year-old was cycling on an off-road path near Nicholson Park at Woonona.

Witnesses say he tried to dodge a swooping magpie when he left the path and collided with a fence post.

The man was thrown to the ground, suffering serious head injuries.

He was treated at the scene before being airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical condition.

The man died from his injuries last night.

Officers are investigating the incident and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

“Terrible stuff isn’t it,” says Alan Jones.

“You can’t bargain for your fate in life can you.”
