Cyclist dies trying to avoid swooping magpie

A man has died after crashing his bike while trying to avoid a swooping magpie in Wollongong at the weekend.
Just after 8am on Sunday, the 76-year-old was cycling on an off-road path near Nicholson Park at Woonona.

Witnesses say he tried to dodge a swooping magpie when he left the path and collided with a fence post.
The man was thrown to the ground, suffering serious head injuries.
He was treated at the scene before being airlifted to St George Hospital in a critical condition.
The man died from his injuries last night.
Officers are investigating the incident and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.
“Terrible stuff isn’t it,” says Alan Jones.
“You can’t bargain for your fate in life can you.”
