The Defence Force is closely monitoring a Chinese warship they believe has been sent to spy on a military exercise off the coast of Queensland.

More than 30,000 Australian and US personnel will be taking part in the Talisman Sabre war games over the coming weeks.

The Chinese ship, believed to be fitted with advanced communication systems designed to spy on other militaries, is currently en route to Australian waters.

Retired major general Jim Molan tells John Stanley it’s not uncommon behaviour for China.

“This is exact Cold War behaviour. Everyone indulged in it during the Cold War.

“I guess in some ways we should be flattered, for the simple reason that perhaps they’re coming down here because we’ve got something to listen to.

“It is a very good reminder to all of us that an assertive China is around and about everywhere.”
