The federal government is under fire for appearing to funnel funding for improved mobile phone coverage into its on electorates.

Sharri Markson reports in The Australian today that 40 out of the 54 funding allocations to improve coverage in regional areas were awarded to Labor-held seats.

Of the 11 Coalition electorates to receive funding, seven were seats held by a slim margin.

“This is dodgy,” shadow minister David Coleman told Luke Grant. “That’s the bottom line. This is black and white, it is a clear misuse of taxpayer funds.

“The Coalition’s got more than 60 per cent of seats in rural areas but only 20 per cent of the funding has gone to Coalition electorates.”
