Two people are dead and two others have serious burns following a house fire in the north-western NSW.

Emergency services received a Triple Zero call at 5.30am, alerting them to a fire on Bylong Road at Tamworth.

Firefighters arrived to find the single-storey home well alight with a 27-year-old woman and her seven-year-old son out the front.

Both were rushed to hospital.

The woman is in a critical condition, suffering severe burns to her body. while the boy is in a stable condition, suffering smoke inhalation and minor burns.

Crews made it into the property, tragically finding the bodies of an older woman and a five-year-old child inside.

A 60-year-old man is currently assisting police with their investigation at Tamworth Police Station.
