‘Capable, effective leader’: Defence director on ISIS leader’s death
“Just because there are other problems in the world doesn’t mean that terrorism has gone away”, says Michael Shoebridge, the Director of Defence, Strategy and National Security at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute.
The Director spoke to Scott Emerson on 4BC Drive following US President Joe Biden’s announcement that the leader of the Islamic State had been killed in a US raid in northern Syria.
The head of the terror group, Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, died by suicide during the overnight raid by setting off a blast killing himself and his family as special forces surrounded his hideout.
“He was in control of day to day activities, and he was a key part of ISIS rebuilding itself as a more disperse terrorist outfit after they lost control of great chunks of Syria and Iraq,” Mr Shoebridge said.
“This will have been an unexpected double-loss for ISIS, so it will slow down and complicate their work as a terrorist outfit.”
