Campaign to slash the beer tax for venues to get back on their feet

Queensland hoteliers and industry groups have joined forces calling for a reduction to federal government beer taxes.
People will see prices rise across pubs and clubs tomorrow for draught beer as the biannual increase kicks in.
There’s a new campaign to slash the tax and help venues get back on their feet.
Queensland Hotels Association CEO Bernie Hogan told Sofie Formica Australia has the fourth highest beer tax in the world.
He said it was a “hidden tax” many people didn’t know about, that’s scheduled twice a year and has been in place for more than 30 years.
“One of my publicans said that first week in February is the worst week in the year, because everybody complains about the price of beer,” he said.
Mr Hogan said across the state, demand has “dropped off a cliff” in January with businesses feeling as though they were in lockdown.
