Calls for statue of Tony Abbott to be erected

There are calls for a statue of Tony Abbott to be erected in his former electorate.

The Northern Beaches Council is tossing up on how they will honour the former prime minister who represented Warringah for 25 years.

A motion to honour Mr Abbott has passed with Northern Beaches councillor Pat Daley telling John Stanley several options are being considered.

“We must realise that we had a very unique situation that won’t happen again.

“We had a prime minister and a premier both serving in the same area at the same time.

“The contribution that Tony Abbott has made, that needs to be recognised.”

Some councillors are arguing over whether they should erect a statue, name a park or square after him.

Rita Panahi tells John she has recently spoken with Mr Abbott who has rejoined the Rural Fire Service.

“The public service with him hasn’t stopped just because he’s no longer a member of parliament and he’s always done these things very quietly serving the community.

“I think he’s one of the most misunderstood people in this country.

“It’s hard to think of too many others whose public persona and what they’re like in real life is just so at odds.”
