Calls for an urgent, wide-ranging review into QLD’s soaring suspension rate

Shocking new statistics have revealed a dire picture among Queensland’s troubled youth.
A new report shows vulnerable students are up to six times as likely to be suspended.
It’s prompted calls for a wider review into the state’s suspension rates.
Queensland Family and Child Commission’s principal commissioner, Luke Twyford, has backed calls for a wide-ranging review.
“Certainly the correlation between highly vulnerable being involved in youth justice but also being disengaged from school is a very clear crossover point,” he told Peter Psaltis filling in on 4BC Drive.
He says the past few years have shown that the system can be agile, including allowing students to work from home.
“So the idea that we need to expel students to say that they cannot be part of the education system, I just don’t think that stacks up anymore.”
He says the review should also hear from young people impacted as well as their parents.
