Queenslanders are being urged to support local and source fresh seafood caught in the Sunshine State this Christmas and festive season.

President of the Queensland Seafood Marketers Association, Marshall Betzel, urged Queenslanders buying seafood for Christmas to try and buy it from Queensland suppliers.

“We are blessed, we live in a state that probably produces some of the finest seafood … worldwide. We are very, very fortunate,” he told Scott Emerson.

He said under legislation, retailers need to identify the country of origin.

“The key is, to provide income and jobs for Queensland families, Queensland fishers .. it would be beneficial that they ask for Queensland seafood, where and if possible it’s able to be provided.

“While you’re at the counter say can you show me in the list here what’s the Queensland seafood you’ve got on offer?”
