‘Businesses are failing’: Workers urged to return to the CBD

Scott Emerson

One of Brisbane’s chief executive’s agrees with the premier encouraging workers to head back to the office with Queensland students going back to school next week, but said there is an important point the Premier is missing.

JLL chief executive Stephen Conry told Scott Emerson that he agrees, but the government needs to be the role model in this situation.

“It needs absolute clarity that all public servants are back in the office full-time and leading by example, and the private sector will follow,” he said on 4BC Drive.

Mr Conry explained that Brisbane’s CBD is ‘not quite a ghost town’, but it is nowhere near full compacity, and there aren’t many people working compared to pre-pandemic levels or even last year.

“Businesses are far more successful and far more productive when everyone’s working in the office, and it’s also good for the economy,” he said.

“All sorts of businesses survive because of people coming into the city, and those businesses are failing. Many have completely failed.”
