Broncos coach weighs in on push for national reserve grade competition
Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters has weighed in on a debate around whether the NRL should introduce a reserve grade competition.
There’s been speculation the league are eager to introduce a nationwide reserve grade competition.
“No we don’t need that Pete, we need both the Queensland competition and the NSW second tier … to be strong and how they are strong is by getting good players in those competitions and playing at a level that gets them the opportunity to jump into the NRL squad,” he told Peter Psaltis on Wide World of Sports.
“We’ve had Te Maire Martin, was a train and trial, he started at Wynnum for us. There’s been so maybe over the time they get the opportunity, they train hard.”
He also reflected on the 1992 grand final win, and what’s stayed with him about the game, 30 years on.
“I remember running out of the tunnel onto the Sydney Football Stadium which is where the grand final was played, and the amount of Broncos fans and jerseys, that really surprised me being in Sydney and how many Brisbane people had actually travelled down to see their team play in the grand final.
“That was really lifting to me, I’m an emotional bastard Pete, I get a bit emotional!
“Running down there and seeing how many Brisbane people were there … really lifted me on the occasion.”
