A Brisbane family has been scammed out of $78,000 after being contacted by a sophisticated scammer purporting to be from Suncorp Bank’s fraud department.

Michael Jorgensen’s wife Rachel received a phone call last month while out shopping.

The call was so authentic she verified it was the bank’s phone number.

“He called back later that day and proceeded to coach us through not only how to transfer the funds but also how to increase her limit, which is something that is happening to everybody at the moment that is involved in this scam,” Michael told Jason Dasey, filling in on Brisbane Live.

“It is a systemic problem because there is multiple people having the same story.”

He said they’ve been left high and dry by the bank at every turn and criticised the bank’s “lack of compassion”.
