PM agrees to co-fund flood package on one condition

The plan for a $771 million flood assistance package is now in play after a backflip by the federal government.

The package would see home owners hit by flooding in February be able to retrofit or raise their home, or resell to the government.

Queensland Treasurer Cameron Dick yesterday launched a scathing attack on the Prime Minister after he refused to fund half the plan.

But in a surprise pivot, Scott Morrison has today told Neil Breen the Commonwealth will co-fund the plan with one key caveat.

“There has to be greater transparency about this,” he said. “We don’t want to have politicking over the support that is provided.

“I want them to be transparent with the payments that are being made, I want them to report to the public.

“But as we’re coming into this election, I think people can see what’s going on here.”

Mr Morrison said this commitment means the federal government is now meeting two-thirds of the cost of Queensland’s flood response.

“We’ve already spent more directly than the state government has even committed to.”
