The Bureau of Meteorology has backflipped on its request for the media stop calling it ‘the BoM’.

The change was initially made because the agency was concerned surrounding its various names can affect the effectiveness of forecast messages.

But despite spending $220,000 on the rebrand, the BoM has told 2GB, “The community is welcome to refer to the Bureau in any way they wish, including referring to us as ‘the BoM'”.

“It is up to individual media outlets to determine their style guidelines,” the statement read.

“So basically, they’ve seen the reaction, they’ve heard the reaction and they’ve realised it’s been a bit of a misstep and now we can just call it whatever we like,” Sofie Formica said.

“[It’s] a good thing because if I told you to find the website, guess what it would be: bom.gov.au.”
