Australia’s terror threat level downgraded, new area of concern revealed

The terror threat level in Australia has been downgraded for the first time in 8 years.
ASIO has reduced the risk to “possible” down from “probable”.
But ASIO Director General Mike Burgess has cautioned it doesn’t mean there’s no risk.
“This does not mean the threat is extinguished, far from it. Possible does not mean negligible.”
The agency says there are fewer violent extremists, with the intention to conduct an attack.
“The probability of a terrorist attack has been at that level since 2014, they assess the threat level of a terrorist attack in Australia constantly,” federal political editor Michael Pachi explained.
“For the past 8 years it has been probable.”
ASIO has shifted its some of its resources to focus on espionage, with foreign interference overtaking terrorism as the agency’s key security concern.
