The average metropolitan household in Australia is spending $17,912 a year on transport costs.

Australian Automobile Association CEO Michael Bradley says “in every single city across the country the cost of transport is going up”.

While Brisbane is hit the hardest, Mr Bradley tells Ross Greenwood “it’s not a good story no matter where you look”.

“People get very excited about electricity and gas bills but they take up about, if you believe the ABS (Australian Bureau of Statistics), one or two percent of the household budget.

“On average, across Australia, people are spending 13.5% of their income on transport.”
