Manhunt underway for killer of Australian tourist shot dead in New Zealand

A manhunt is underway for the man who shot dead an Australian tourist after a robbery in New Zealand.

Police have confirmed the 33-year-old victim is Victorian man Sean McKinnon.

He was shot dead in a campervan in Raglan on the North Island, outside Auckland.

Police say the Australian man and a Canadian woman were sleeping in their campervan when they were woken by a stranger banging on their window.

The Australian male was then shot and the campervan which was driven off with his body in it and then dumped by the attacker.

NewsHub Reporter in New Zealand Ella Prendergast tells Ben Fordham they don’t know if the shooter was a man or a woman.

“Police are calling it a random and a tragic attack.

“They do have a lead and they’re looking for a vehicle at the moment.

“Those policemen who are out hunting for this person are armed as well.”

Newstalk ZB Radio New Zealand Lesley Deverall says it was a stormy night in the remote area.

She tells Steve Price the man’s Canadian girlfriend managed to get away.

“She’s had to run several kilometres to raise the alarm because it is such an isolated spot.

“They’ve now found the campervan.”
