Do you remember the Six Million Dollar Man?

If so, before you think Steve Austin’s eye implants were completely far-fetched, the biomedical engineering department at the University of Sydney in collaboration with UNSW Sydney is setting its sights on the futuristic implants.

The Phoenix99 bionic eye system is a fully implantable system which could restore vision to thousands of patients nationwide.

Professor Gregg Suaning from The University of Sydney is one of the people behind the project and he tells Ross Greenwood “we’re still a way off, but we are getting there”.

“We’re building up this device and we’ve tested it, and everything’s working perfectly.

“We’re gearing up for humans studies as soon as we can possibly do it.”
