Australian Open’s late-night epic ignites debate
The boss of Tennis Australia has ruled out changes to how matches are scheduled despite complaints about last night’s late finish.
Former world number one Andy Murray fought back from two sets down to defeat Thanasi Kokkinakis in a thriller match at the Australian Open that lasted almost six hours to 4am DST.
It was the second latest finishing match in the tournament’s history.
“It’s sparking a debate again,” Peter Psaltis told Laurel, Gary & Mark. “We had a match years ago when Lleyton Hewitt played Marcos Baghdatis and that went to 5am.
“It is a tough one. Craig Tiley, the tournament director and boss of Tennis Australia, he has said there will be no change to how they schedule matches here and into the future.”
