Australian Medical Association ramps up push for sugar tax on soft drinks

The Australian Medical Association is ramping up its long-standing push for a sugar tax on soft drink.

AMA Vice President Chris Moy says he’s confident a price rise would work.

“We’ve done some figures, which show something like a 20 per cent increase in the price of sugary drinks has had similar effects in overseas countries.

“[They’ve seen] a 20 or 30 per cent reduction in sugary drink consumption and an increase in the consumption of water.”
