Australia Day ‘noise’ distracting from bigger issues

Doctor Anthony Dillon, postdoctoral fellow at Australian Catholic University, has called Australia Day protesters a “noisy minority”.

Dr Dillon, an Indigenous Australian, tells Chris Kenny protestors should be focusing on “far more important issues”.

“If protestors truly cared about Aboriginal people they would be out protesting about the appalling conditions that far too many [Indigenous Australians] live in.

“I can guarantee you the people who live in these conditions are not the least bit concerned about Australia Day celebrations.”

Dr Dillon also says Australians use the day as an opportunity to celebrate the nation.

“Nobody is celebrating what may have happened in the past. They’re just taking the opportunity to reflect on what a great country Australia is.”
